Abstract

Background: Campylobacter species are leading cause of gastroenteritis associated with rapid emergency of resistance to common antibiotics for treatment of human infection. Objectives: This study investigated the prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility of Campylobacter jejuni isolates from children under 5 years old in Maiduguri. Materials and Methods: Stool samples were collected from 245 children with diarrhoea and 100 children without diarrhoea. C. jejuni was isolated using standard microbiological techniques and confirmed with conventional polymerase chain reaction assay. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed on the isolates using the disc diffusion method: Results: The prevalence of C. jejuni was 21.6% (53/245) in children with diarrhoea and 5% (5/100) in children without diarrhoea. The prevalence was highest in children 2 years of age and lowest in 5 years old children. Antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed high resistance of the isolates to ampicillin, tetracycline and ciprofloxacin. However the isolates were susceptible to gentamicin, azithromycin and chloramphenicol. Multidrug resistance was detected in 48/53 (90.5%) of isolates. Conclusion: The study has provided valuable data on prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility of C. jejuni in paediatric diarrhoeal patients in Maiduguri. The finding highlights the need for improved sanitation, hygiene practices and judicious use of antibiotics in both human and veterinary medicine.
